The A-Z Guide: Witnessing the Con Dao Sea Turtle Nesting Season

One of the most magical experiences in Con Dao doesn’t happen underwater, but on its sandy beaches beneath the moonlight. Con Dao is the largest sea turtle “maternity ward” in Vietnam, and witnessing this spectacle is a profound privilege.

However, this is not an entertainment tour. It is a strictly managed conservation activity. At Amadive, we believe in responsible tourism, and this E-E-A-T guide will tell you everything you need to know to experience this sacred moment with respect.

(As we covered in our [Con Dao Marine Life Guide ], the turtle’s journey is an integral part of the ecosystem here).

1. When to Go?

  • Main Season: The official nesting season runs from May to October annually.
  • Peak Season: The absolute peak, with the highest chance of seeing a mother turtle come ashore, is from June to August.
  • Time of Day: Mother turtles ONLY come ashore at night, during high tide. Tours typically start after 8 PM and can last until 2-3 AM.

2. Where to Go?

  • The Main Site: Bay Canh Island (Hòn Bảy Cạnh). This is the primary nesting beach and the most strictly protected.
  • The Authority: This activity is managed exclusively by the Con Dao National Park rangers. You cannot go on your own.
  • Other Sites: Cau Island and a few other remote beaches also have nesting, but Bay Canh is where the conservation and controlled-tourism program is focused.

3. How to Join?

You have two main options for this experience:

  1. Night Tour (Same-day return):
  • You take a speedboat from the main town to Bay Canh Island in the evening.
  • You will wait with the National Park Rangers, patrolling the beach for a mother turtle.
  • After the sighting, you return to town late at night.
  1. Overnight Tour (Recommended):
  • You stay at the Ranger Station on Bay Canh Island.
  • This gives you a much longer window of time to wait, increasing your chances.
  • The Bonus: In the early morning, you will likely have the opportunity to participate in releasing hatchlings (if a nest is due) into the sea.

Note: You must book this tour through the National Park or an authorized tour operator. The number of people allowed on the island each night is extremely limited.

4. The Golden Rules: What You MUST Do

This is the most critical part (E-E-A-T). Mother turtles are incredibly sensitive. If disturbed, they will get scared, return to the sea, and may be forced to drop their eggs in the water (where they will not survive).

When you are on the tour:

  • BE ABSOLUTELY SILENT: No loud talking.
  • NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY: White light will scare the turtle. Only use the ranger’s specialized red-light torch, and only when permitted.
  • FOLLOW THE RANGER: Do exactly as they say. Do not wander off.
  • DO NOT TOUCH: Never touch the mother turtle or the hatchlings.
  • KEEP YOUR DISTANCE: Stay behind the mother turtle at all times until she has begun digging her nest.

5. Releasing the Hatchlings (A Separate Miracle)

If you stay overnight or take an early morning tour, you may join the release. Rangers will take you to nests that are due to hatch. Watching hundreds of tiny turtles begin their “race” to the sea is an incredibly hopeful moment.

Conclusion

Witnessing the turtle nesting is one of the most worthwhile [Things to do in Con Dao]. It is a powerful reminder of why conservation matters.

At Con Dao Dive Center Amadive, we specialize in underwater encounters (like diving with turtles), but we fully support and can advise you on how to book this terrestrial conservation tour responsibly.
