Top 5 Best Coral Reef Sites in Con Dao (A Pro Diver’s Guide)

Con Dao is a living library of coral, with over 360 species recorded. But with numerous islands and submerged pinnacles, how do you know exactly where the most vibrant coral gardens are?

As a professional Con Dao Dive Center, Amadive’s Divemasters have spent thousands of hours exploring every meter of reef. We don’t just take you to a dive site; we take you to the sites where the coral is thriving most.

As mentioned in our Con Dao Marine Life Identification Guide, understanding the coral is key to appreciating the ocean. Now, let’s see where to find them.

Here are the top 5 coral sites in Con Dao, based on Amadive’s first-hand experience.

1. Bay Canh Island (Inner Reef)

  • Overview: This is one of Con Dao’s most diverse and established ecosystems. While famous for turtles, Bay Canh also boasts a stunning fringing reef.
  • Coral Highlights: Enormous Table Corals, some spanning several meters in diameter. You’ll also find a high density of Massive (boulder) corals and Gorgonians.
  • Amadive’s Expertise: This is a fantastic site for both scuba and snorkeling as the reef starts in very shallow water. The currents are mild and visibility is often good, making it ideal for beginners and training dives.
  • Common Sightings: Clownfish, Butterflyfish, and the occasional resting Green Turtle.

2. Tai Island (Glove Island)

  • Overview: Tai Island is a site of beautiful contrasts. One side of the island features stunning soft corals, while the other is home to impressive hard coral formations.
  • Coral Highlights: Brain corals and Mushroom corals. The main feature is the abundance of Anemones—home to multiple “Nemo” families.
  • Amadive’s Expertise: We often choose Tai Island for divers interested in macro photography. The diversity of small critters hiding within the coral is endless. It’s one of our favorite sites for a Diving Con Dao discovery trip.

3. Cau Island

  • Overview: A slightly more remote island, Cau Island has a truly wild feel. It was once a farming settlement, but underwater, it’s a different world.
  • Coral Highlights: This site is known for its healthy fields of Staghorn and Plate corals. The colors here are particularly vibrant due to the excellent water quality.
  • Amadive’s Expertise: Due to its location, Cau Island often has the best visibility on the archipelago. It makes for a fantastic day trip, combining diving with island exploration.

4. Tre Islands (Big & Small)

  • Overview: The Tre archipelago is an underwater maze of pinnacles and canyons, completely carpeted in coral.
  • Coral Highlights: Massive Sea Fans and rare Black Corals. The depth is slightly greater here, which allows for these impressive structures to grow.
  • Amadive’s Expertise: This is a site for more experienced (Advanced) divers. The interesting topography and the chance to see larger fish (like schools of Barracuda) make it one of the most challenging and rewarding dives.

5. Trung Island (Egg Island)

  • Overview: This is the most remote and dramatic dive site. Trung Island is a barren rock, a nesting ground for birds, but beneath the surface, it’s a coral metropolis.
  • Coral Highlights: Everything. The coral coverage here is 100%. Walls are covered in soft corals, sea fans, and sponges.
  • Amadive’s Expertise: We only make this trip when weather conditions are perfect. This is a dive for advanced, confident divers, where you can feel the raw power and pristine beauty of the ocean.

Conclusion

Each of Con Dao’s coral reefs has its own personality. Choosing the “best” one depends on the weather, the season, and your experience level.

As your Con Dao Dive Center, Amadive doesn’t follow a fixed schedule. We check the conditions every morning and choose the site that will give you the safest, most spectacular experience.
