The Complete Guide to Sea Turtle Season in Con Dao
Swimming alongside a gentle sea turtle in its natural habitat is a magical experience every diver dreams of. In Con Dao, that dream can easily become a reality. The Con Dao National Park is the most important sea turtle conservation area in Vietnam, and understanding their nesting season will give you the best chance of an encounter.
1. When is Turtle Season in Con Dao?
The golden window for turtle sightings coincides with the calm sea season, which is also their nesting period.
- Main Season: Lasts from May through September.
- Peak Season: Especially right now, from June to August, is when mother turtles come ashore to nest most frequently, and the chances of seeing them underwater are also at their highest.
2. What Kinds of Turtles Will You See?

Con Dao is home to two species of rare sea turtles:
- Green Turtle (Vích): The most common species here. They are large and often found grazing on seagrass beds or resting under coral ledges.
- Hawksbill Turtle (Đồi mồi): Smaller and distinguished by their sharp, hawk-like beak, which they use to forage for sponges and anemones in reef crevices.
3. How to Observe Turtles Responsibly
This is critically important for their protection. At Amadive, we strictly adhere to these rules.
- Underwater:
- Keep Your Distance: Always maintain a minimum distance of 3-4 meters.
- Do Not Touch: Never, ever touch a turtle. The mucous layer on their shell protects them from bacteria.
- Do Not Chase: Let them swim freely. Do not swim directly above them or block their path.
- On Shore (Nesting Tours):
- This activity is managed by the National Park Rangers. Always go with a guide.
- Be Silent: Avoid frightening the nesting mother.
- No Flash Photography: White light can disorient the turtles. Only use the red-light lamps provided by the rangers.
4. The Best Dive Sites for Turtle Encounters

While you can see a turtle anywhere in Con Dao, a few sites offer the highest probability:
- Bay Canh Island & Cau Island: These are their favorite feeding and resting areas.
- Shallow areas with seagrass: This is where Green Turtles often come to “dine.”
Conclusion: Witnessing sea turtles in the wild is a privilege. By observing them responsibly, we are all contributing to the protection of these magnificent ancient creatures for generations to come.
