PADI Open Water Dive Courses vs. Advanced: What’s the Difference?
The Core Difference: The PADI Open Water Diver course is your entry-level certification, teaching basic survival skills and safety for diving up to 18 meters. In contrast, the Advanced Open Water Diver course focuses on practical experiences (like Deep Diving and Navigation), extending your limit to 30 meters with no formal written exams.
If you are reading this, you are likely standing on the threshold of the underwater world, asking: “Where do I start?” or “I’m already certified, do I really need the next level?”.
At Amadive, we frequently guide guests through these choices. While the names sound similar, the objectives of Open Water Dive Courses and the Advanced Open Water Dive Course are distinct. Let Kevin and the Amadive team clarify this for you.
1. PADI Open Water Diver: Your License to Dive
This is the beginning of your journey. If you have never dived before, this course is for you.
In Open Water Dive Courses, the number one priority is SAFETY. You will learn how to use scuba equipment (BCDs, Regulators), how to equalize, and most importantly, how to handle underwater emergencies.
-
Max Depth: 18 meters (60 feet).
-
Structure: Theory + Confined Water (Pool) + 4 Open Water Dives.
-
Prerequisite: Basic swimming skills and good physical health.
The Amadive Standard: We maintain a strict ratio of max 2 students per Instructor for Open Water courses. We do not do “factory style” teaching. You need time to feel comfortable with your buoyancy before exploring the waters of Con Dao or Phu Quoc.

2. PADI Advanced Open Water Diver: The License to Explore
Many people mistakenly believe “Advanced” means it is only for experts. In reality, you can take this course immediately after finishing your Open Water.
The Advanced Open Water Dive Course is not about studying in a classroom. It is about “Thinking Like A Diver.” You will complete 5 Adventure Dives, which must include:
-
Deep Dive: Descending to depths up to 30 meters.
-
Underwater Navigation: Learning to use a compass and natural landmarks.
The other three dives are your choice, such as Wreck Diving, Night Diving, or Peak Performance Buoyancy.

4. Why Upgrade to Advanced with Amadive?
There are 3 main reasons why the upgrade is worth it, especially in Vietnamese waters:
-
Access the Best Dive Sites: In Con Dao or Phu Quoc, pristine coral reefs and pelagic fish are often found deeper than 18m. With an Advanced license, you are not limited.
-
Better Air Consumption: The course improves your Buoyancy Control, meaning you struggle less and your tank lasts longer.
-
Premium Amadive Experience: Following our Eco-friendly values, we teach you how to be an Advanced diver who respects marine life—perfecting your trim to ensure “no touch” diving.
