From Open Water to Advanced Diver: Your Scuba Skills Progression Pathway
Congratulations! Earning your Open Water Diver certification has opened the door to 70% of the planet. But this is just the beginning. Think of that card as a “license to learn”—and now, the real learning journey begins.
If you’re asking yourself “What’s next?” and want to become a more confident, safer, and more capable diver, this is the roadmap for you. Amadive will lay out the skill development path that takes you from a new diver to a true underwater explorer.

Why Go Beyond the Open Water Certification?
Continuing your dive education isn’t just about collecting more certification cards. It’s about enabling you to:
- Dive Deeper: Explore reefs and wrecks that lie beyond the 18-meter (60-foot) limit.
- Gain More Confidence: Reinforce core skills and learn to handle new situations, making you feel more comfortable and in control underwater.
- Unlock New Adventures: Participate in exciting specialty dives like night diving, wreck diving, or drift diving.
- Become a Better Buddy: Enhance your awareness and skills to be a more reliable and helpful dive partner.
The Core Next Step: The Advanced Open Water (AOW) Course
This is the most logical and popular step after your Open Water certification. Don’t let the word “Advanced” intimidate you. This course isn’t designed to make you an expert; it’s designed to “advance” your experience through adventure dives.

The course consists of five dives, each focusing on a different skill or area:
